Dart Outdoors initiative taking place Feb. 9-13 across Newfoundland and Labrador

News, Sports

More than 36,000 participants from 165 schools across the province are taking their learning outside this week as part of Dart Outdoors, an annual initiative by School Sports NL (SSNL). Running from Feb. 9-13 during NLTA’s Education Week, this event encourages students and teachers alike to embrace outdoor activity while engaging in fun, movement-based learning experiences.

This year’s Education Week theme is, “Learn! Teach! Inspire! / Apprendre! Enseigner! Inspirer!”, and what better place to find inspiration and learn than in the great outdoors. Each school plans its own activities, unique to its location, with students taking part in everything from snowshoeing, sliding, and sculpture building to hiking, snow relays, boil-ups, orienteering and so much more.

Now in its tenth year, Dart Outdoors continues to provide students with an opportunity to be active outside while fostering a love for movement and nature. Karen Richard, Executive Director of SSNL, emphasizes the significance of the initiative: “Dart Outdoors is about more than fresh air and movement – it’s about giving students the opportunity to build confidence, try something new, and learn in ways that extend beyond the classroom walls. Through Dart Outdoors, schools are creating meaningful moments that support both physical and mental health, while reinforcing that learning can happen anywhere. This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate 10 years of encouraging our schools to Dart Outdoors.”

Schools have the chance to win exciting prizes, including a Pickleball bundle (2 Nets | 8 Paddles | 12 Balls), and a $750 credit with Gopher Sports. Schools are encouraged to share photos/videos to their social media during the week and tag School Sports NL, to enter.
