St. John’s Regional Fire Department mourning loss of former fire commissioner Derek Simmons
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its dedicated members. The department confirmed Derek Simmons’ passing this morning via social media.
Simmons dedicated his career to public service as the Fire Commissioner for Newfoundland and Labrador, where his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to fire and life safety made a lasting impact across the province.
“Over the years, our department worked closely with Derek, and we greatly valued his collaboration, guidance, and steadfast support,” SJRFD said in a statement. “His knowledge, integrity, and respectful approach fostered strong working relationships and meaningful progress in our shared efforts.”
Following his retirement, his colleagues said he left behind a legacy of service and respect that will not be forgotten by those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
