Province withdraws from federal ‘assault-style’ firearms program

News, Politics

The provincial government has announced it will not be participating in a highly contentious federal government program aimed at buying back assault rifles. In a statement, the government raised concerns about the program’s practicality and the strain it says, would be placed on police resources. The province added it isn’t convinced the program would deliver meaningful improvements to public safety.

In a government-issued statement, Premier Tony Wakeham said “As Premier, I call on the Federal Government to further engage provinces and territories on this issue, and to re-allocate the resources allotted for this program toward reducing crime, drug-related violence, and repeat offenders. Decisions are being made at a federal level that are isolated from legitimate civilian use of firearms. The Federal Government should focus on criminals, not law-abiding hunters and our way of life.”
