RNC warning west coast motorists of poor driving conditions
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is reminding motorists to keep safety top of mind as another blast of winter is creating poor driving conditions in western Newfoundland.
The RNC is currently on the Trans-Canada Highway with other emergency responders working to clear the roadway after a number of tractor trailers became stuck between the Riverside Drive and Murphy’s Square exits due to slippery roads and whiteout conditions.
The RNC is urging all motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. For those that must travel plan ahead and monitor weather forecasts. Safe winter driving habits include:
- Allowing extra travel time and driving according to the conditions in your area.
- Clearing snow and ice from your vehicle, including windows, lights, mirror and plate, as well as off the top of your vehicle.
· Increasing your following distance to allow time to stop on slippery roads.
· Keeping a shovel and road salt in your trunk in case your vehicle becomes stuck.
· Have your vehicle serviced regularly to ensure it is in good working order.
