Prime Minister Mark Carney in China to begin trade mission

News, Politics

Prime Minister Mark Carney is in China today, marking the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to China in almost a decade. He is expected to meet with President Xi Jinping on Thursday.

A key issue this week will be China’s tariffs on canola and seafood, which were imposed after Ottawa ordered tariffs on various Chinese products.

Carney has told the media he hopes to advance trade talks with China.

Political insiders, though, argue the visit is much more consequential, as China and Canada try to move past years of diplomatic tensions. The timing is also questionable given the geo-political tension with the United States.
