Highway head-on collision sends multiple people to hospital
A head-on collision on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) Sunday evening sent multiple people to hospital.
Shortly before 8:00 p.m. emergency crews were called to the westbound lanes of the TCH, just east of the Topsail Road exit in Paradise. The driver of an SUV had reportedly been traveling eastbound in the oncoming lanes when a collision occurred between that vehicle and a pickup truck. Both vehicles sustained significant damage in the collision, with the pickup truck coming to rest on its side in the median.
Reports from the scene indicated that five people in total were taken to hospital. No injuries were believed at the time to be life-threatening.
A piece of heavy equipment was summoned to clear debris and snow from the roadway. Traffic was slowed for over two hours as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary investigated the collision, and as the scene was cleared.
