Cloverleaf roadwork complete, other work wrapping up

After months of road closures, detours and frustrating delays for motorists, road work on highways in St. John’s metro area is finally clewing up.

The cloverleaf overpass on Pitts Memorial Drive is complete. The contractor hired by the Department of Transportation has demobilized the site, which connects to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The extensive structural repairs included installing support columns for the bridge, concrete and culverts and deck repairs. The repairs are expected to extend the life of the structure by up to 15 years.

Work on the CN viaduct, along Pitts Memorial Drive, is expected to finish by Saturday. The roadway that sees up to 25,000 vehicles a day.  the work began in 2023 and included restoring the median barrier, installing light poles and culverts, re-paving, as well as concrete work over the bridge.

Construction on the bridge on Pitts Memorial Drive, above Blackhead Road, is scheduled to continue until Dec. 13. Once it’s complete, traffic will be free flowing to and from the St. John’s downtown area.
