Makkovik RCMP and Postville Ground Search and Rescue save snowmobiler who fell through the ice; reminds public of precautions as snowmobile season begins

Justice, News

Makkovik RCMP thanks Postville Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) for assistance provided on Sunday in the safe rescue of a snowmobiler who went through the ice.

A woman went through thin ice while riding her snowmobile across Salmon Pond on Sunday just before 1:00 p.m. The woman was able to get off her snowmobile and make it to shore safely, without being submerged. The vehicle was later recovered from the water.

The woman was located and returned without any injuries.

As winter weather arrives to our province, it is essential that safety is top of mind when travelling on snowmobiles or other all-terrain vehicles in the winter. Police encourage those venturing out to put safety first, especially when heading to isolated areas.

Snowmobile operators should continually check ice conditions, as bodies of water throughout the province may not be safe for travel.

Always ride sober and wear the proper safety gear, including helmets. Helmets and safety goggles/glasses, a face shield or a windshield high enough to protect your eyes are mandatory legal requirements for snowmobile operators and passengers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Before heading out, riders should fully prepare for any situation. In the event you become lost, have mechanical issues, run into bad weather or other unexpected delays – these preparations could be lifesaving. Packing additional food, water, and fire-making equipment is strongly recommended. Wearing the proper layers of winter clothing is essential.

Communication devices, including cell phones, satellite phones and satellite tracking devices, are also recommended.  Riders should keep in mind that cell phone service is unavailable in many isolated areas throughout the province.

Police also remind snowmobilers to notify others of their planned route and return time.
