Protest planned as crab harvesters heading back to Confederation Building Monday morning
Crab harvesters are returning to Confederation Building Monday morning. The House of Assembly is set to open that afternoon.
In a social media post, organizer John Efford called on harvesters to meet outside Confederation Building at 7 a.m. on Monday to call on the government to keep its promise of free enterprise in the fishery.
“We will be gathering tomorrow morning at confederation building because we have to protect our historical market share which we’ve had taken from us by a terrible decision made by panel two years in a row, a decision in favour of a group of processors who have shown historical profits while we go under,” Efford wrote on Facebook.
“We had a meeting today with [Fisheries Minister Elvis] Lovless and staff they are looking into concerns about our outside buyer issues and will hopefully respond before today’s end.
“I am getting reports from police agencies that there are some planning violence tomorrow I assured police that we have and will continue to promote peaceful protest. I know frustration levels are very high but it’s our numbers that make a statement and what has worked.”
