Keeping shelves stocked with food is a year-round challenge for food banks during the holiday season, adding extra pressure to the already strained service. The Salvation Army in St. John’s is sending out an urgent call for donation for their food hampers. The Salvation Army in St. John’s has been providing 300-360 food hampers per week – with an additional 25-30 emergency food hampers – with the demand outweighing supply,
As of this week, they can only provide hampers with enough food for one to two people.
Executive Director of the Ches Penney Centre for Hope and The Wiseman Centre, Major Steven Barrett, says this means families greater than two are not receiving enough food to feel their families. The Salvation Army Food Bank drop-off is located at the Salvation Army Ches Penney Centre of Hope, on Springdale Street in St. John’s.
