A fire in the centre of St. John’s on Saturday afternoon has caused extensive damage to a home and displaced six residents.
Fire crews were alerted to the blaze, on Wexford Street, by a resident of the home at about 4:15 p.m.. When crews arrived on scene they were met with heavy smoke pouring from the dwelling and fire coming from a side door. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire, however the home was extensively damaged.
Dean Foley, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, stated that a total of six residents have been displaced as a result of the fire, four of whom were home at the time. All managed to escape the blaze safely.
Firefighters were on scene for a little over an hour, ensuring no hot spots remained and recovering some important belongings from the damaged home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
