Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was in St. John’s today meeting with seniors to discuss Canada’s dental plan. Singh also named the party’s first special advisor for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Jim Dinn wins NDP leadership by acclamation

Jim Dinn has won the NDP leadership by acclamation, the party announced Tuesday.

Nominations closed Monday afternoon with Dinn as the only candidate coming forward. Dinn had been serving as interim leader since 2021, when Alison Coffin stepped down after losing a leadership review vote.

Dinn had initially disavowed any interest in holding the leadership permanently, but changed his mind in 2023 after receiving encouragement to run from within the party. He now leads a caucus of three in the House of Assembly with Labrador MHAs Jordan Brown and Lela Evans.

“For two years Jordan Brown, Lela Evans, and I have focused on the needs of the people of the province, and we will continue to do exactly that,” Dinn said in a statement.

NDP hopes to learn trial dates next month in court challenge of 2021 election

With the NDP leadership race getting underway, the party still has another piece of outstanding business: the court challenge of the election results in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, where former leader Alison Coffin lost to Liberal John Abbott in the COVID-plagued election of 2021. NDP president Kyle Rees says the party hopes to learn what the trial dates will be next month.

NAPE calls on Furey government to oppose privatization of health care

The province’s largest public sector union has followed the NDP’s lead in calling on the Furey government to oppose privatization of the province’s health care system.
