A St. John’s man suspected of intentionally setting fire to four properties in the capital city has pleaded guilty to one of them — at an historic home.
Alex Hayes appeared via video in provincial court as his lawyer entered the guilty plea to a charge of arson on his behalf.
The RNC arrested the 31-year-old Hayes on Jan. 26 in relation to a fire at a municipal heritage building at 1 Bonaventure Avenue, near The Rooms.
Investigators determined the blaze was purposely set.
Hayes was also suspected in fires at Freshwater Auto, as well as two residential sheds – on Empire Avenue and Fraser’s Lane. Charges in relation to those incidents, which include arson and break and enter with intent, are being conditionally withdrawn by the Crown.
A sentencing hearing has been set for Jan. 19, 2024.
