Victoria Day Long Weekend Forecast: Tame Start, But Some Twists Ahead

As we approach the May 24–Victoria Day long weekend, the weather in Newfoundland and Labrador is shaping up to be relatively tame — though not without its moments of change.

A disturbance will roll through overnight, spreading rain across most of the island by Thursday morning. Meanwhile, the rain in Labrador will taper off as the system moves out.

Tonight’s Forecast:

  • Eastern Newfoundland: Cloud cover builds in overnight, with light rain and showers arriving after midnight. Lows near 3°C.
  • Central Newfoundland: Rain moves in with temperatures dipping to around 6°C.
  • Western Newfoundland: Showers will gradually end, with an overnight low near 8°C.
  • Southern Newfoundland: Showers ease late tonight, and temperatures fall to around 6°C.
  • Northern Peninsula: Rain ends late with a low near 2°C.
  • Labrador: Coastal rain ends overnight, with lows of 2°C. Inland areas like Goose Bay, Nain, and Labrador West will fall close to freezing.

Thursday’s Outlook:

  • Eastern Newfoundland: Morning showers give way to a mix of sun and cloud. A midday high of 13°C will drop to 6–7°C by supper as northerly winds gust up to 40 km/h.
  • Central Newfoundland: Mainly sunny with a high near 16°C.
  • Western Newfoundland: Sun and cloud dominate after morning showers, but temps drop from 12°C to single digits by afternoon.
  • Southern Newfoundland: Morning showers, then some clearing. High near 16°C.
  • Northern Peninsula: Mostly sunny skies and a high near 7°C.
  • Labrador: Partly to mostly sunny across the region. Highs range from -1°C in the north to 7°C near the Straits.

Looking Ahead:

  • Friday: Sunny skies across the province. Highs between 6–10°C on the island and 3–10°C in Labrador, with coastal areas staying cooler.
  • Saturday:
    • Island: Sunshine continues with highs in the low teens.
    • Labrador: Showers arrive in the west with highs near 13°C, while the coast stays chilly near 5°C.
  • Sunday: Clouds increase across Newfoundland with highs of 10–15°C. Labrador will be near 10°C.
  • Victoria Day (Monday): A few showers are possible over southern Newfoundland. Labrador sees a better chance of showers, with highs near 6°C in Labrador and 6–12°C on the island.

Extended Outlook:

Next week could trend on the chilly side as a blocking pattern sets up around the province, keeping winds onshore and temperatures subdued — especially along the coasts.
