On June 30, Mayor Carol McDonald was an honoured recipient of the Confederation 75 Medal, hosted by Lieutenant Governor Joan Marie J. Aylward at Government House. The Mayor of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s was awarded the medal on behalf of the province for the significant contributions made to Newfoundland and Labrador. The medal presentation included a tree planting to mark 75 years since Confederation.
Over the span of her career, Mayor McDonald has achieved numerous milestones, including being the first female Mayor of Portugal Cove, serving as President of the Association of New Canadians for two decades, acting as the Human Rights Commissioner for Newfoundland and Labrador, and receiving the inaugural Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) Women’s Inspiration Award.
Mayor Carol McDonald was honoured alongside Dr. Carmel Casey, Kevin Major, Greg Malone, the family of medal recipient Richard Cashin, John Pauls, Elizabeth Penashue, and Sister Elizabeth Davis. These medals were awarded to residents in recognition of their significant contributions of time and energy towards making Newfoundland and Labrador a better place to live.
“The magnitude of this honour is one that I carry close to my heart. I’m a proud Newfoundlander and Labradorian, and throughout my career I make the choice each day to represent the province and its people,” she said.
