Suspected drug dealer charged in death of young teen due back in court next month
Zachery Mulrooney — a suspected St. John’s drug dealer believed to have been responsible for the sudden, overdose death of a 14-year-old boy — had his case called in provincial court today.
Mulrooney was represented by his lawyer, Jonathan Regan, who appeared by phone. Regan asked to set the case over to ensure he has all the disclosure.
Mulrooney faces charges of manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death, along with four counts related to drug trafficking.
The 19-year-old was charged after 14-year-old Axel Martin died on March 15 of a toxic drug overdose. Police believe Mulrooney supplied the boy with those drugs.
In September, many of the late teen’s family and friends took part in a rally on the steps of Confederation Building. They joined a group to speak out about what they say is a need for government to do more about the drug crisis in the province.
Mulrooney is not in custody, having been released on strict conditions in September. His case is scheduled to return to court next month.
NTV’s Rosie Mullaley will have more on the NTV Evening News.
