It didn’t take long for IOC workers in Labrador City to head to the picket line after an overwhelming “yes” to a strike vote was conducted last night.

Exactly 92 percent of United Steelworkers Union Local 5795 at the IOC mine are now on strike. The union said talks broke down last month over issues like pensions and sick leave. The union wanted wage increases and believed their offer was a fair one. The strike began at 3 a.m.

In its latest offer, IOC offered wage increases of 2.4 per cent every year for five years, as well as increased contributions to the defined pension plan and a reduction of temporary workers from 12.5 to six per cent.

NTV’s Jodi Cooke is covering the story and will have a full report at 6 on the award-winning NTV Evening Newshour.
