An update on a crash that claimed the lives of two  on the Trans Canada highway early Sunday morning.

It happened roughly two kilometers west of Gander, near Transmitter Hill around 4am.

Two vehicles, a pickup truck and an SUV were involved in the crash, one of which caught on fire. Gander Fire & Rescue confirmed the driver of the SUV, a 65-year-old man, and front passenger, a 63-year-old woman, both from Lewisporte, were deceased.

The two surviving passengers in the  vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries.


The driver, and lone occupant of the truck, a 20-year-old man from Gander, was also taken to hospital.

RCMP are investigating whether or not impairment was a factor.

The highway was closed with no detour option for a couple of hours forcing significant traffic backlogs.  The investigation is ongoing.
