The Victoria Grizzlies junior hockey team has named St. John’s native Alex Newhook as its rookie of the year.

The 17-year-old was in the hunt for the British Columbia Hockey League scoring title but was sidelined with a broken wrist last month. It’s been an incredible season for Newhook, notching 22 goals and 44 assists for 66 points in just 45 games played.

Earlier this season, Newhook played for Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. In just his first full season of junior hockey, Newhook has already committed to Boston College but will play out this season and the next in the BCHL. The young star is projected to be selected in the first three rounds of the 2019 NHL Entry draft.
