There was a narrow escape last night for a snowmobile driver who went through the ice on a pond in Goulds.

It was a cold, dark and blustery night. Rescue personal from both the Goulds and St. John’s fire departments, along with Eastern Health and the RNC responded to the 911 call of a person in the water shortly after 8 o’clock last night. An area resident was able to assist by throwing a life preserver to the man in the water.

Two snowmobilers were on the pond when one went through the ice. It happened about a half of a kilometer from the nearest road. A city snowplow had to be brought in to help with access to the scene. The man was cold and wet but didn’t require hospitalization.

NTV’s photojournalist Bart Fraize was on the scene and will have a report this evening on the NTV Evening Newshour.
