Hospital Cancels Elective Surgeries

CORNER BROOK -- Last fall, it was the H1N1 virus that had health officials on the west coast scrambling. Now, an outbreak of the Norwalk virus is also causing headaches for medical personnel throughout the region.
Western Health has announced that, effective immediately, elective surgeries at Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook will be cancelled. An unusually high number of people requiring treatment for the Norwalk virus has left the hospital pressed for space.
Western Health will be contacting all individuals scheduled for elective surgery to advise them of the cancellation.
The hospital will continue to provide surgical services to patients on an emergency basis, and when elective surgeries are deemed clinically urgent.
At this point, it's unknown how long the operating rooms will be closed to elective surgeries. Western Health will monitor patients' needs for emergency, in-patient acute care, and intensive care, and will advise the public as soon as the hospital is able to resume elective surgeries.
There will likely be a backlog of non-emergency surgical procedures following this shutdown, but health officials are optimistic they'll be able to get through the increased work load quickly.
Meanwhile, visitor restrictions remain in place at Western Memorial due to the outbreak of the Norwalk virus, and that ban will continue until this latest crisis is resolved.
