With professional hockey returning to Mile One Centre this fall, there’s been plenty of speculation as to what the team name will be.
It was speculated the city’s East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) team could be named the Shamrocks – a throw-back to the popular city team that won the Herder Memorial Trophy title back in the 1970s. That’s not the case. Other names like Caps (or Capitals) and Maple Leafs were also mentioned as potential names, but have since been ruled out.
According to The Telegram’s Brendan McCarthy – one of the most trusted sports journalists in minor pro hockey – the new name will be the ‘Newfoundland Growlers’ – with references to an iceberg and a growling bear.
A domain name titled ‘Newfoundland Growlers’ has been established. NTV contacted the club today but officials would neither confirm nor deny the team name.
The new ECHL club brings minor pro hockey back to Mile One this season. The American Hockey League, of course, spent over two decades in this province – first with the St. John’s Maple Leafs and later the St. John’s IceCaps.
