The National Basketball League has awarded a franchise to St. John’s, but City Hall doesn’t know anything about it.
The league announced on Twitter Friday evening that its board of governors has agreed to put a team in St. John’s. But city councillor Sandy Hickman, who sits on the Mile One board of directors, says he only learned of the announcement along with everybody else.
Hickman says the city is trying to determine which group has been awarded the franchise. There might be more information on Monday.
Fellow councillor Jonathan Galgay seemed to take exception to how the announcement was made, tweet that it was news to him.
“Tonight’s announcement related to the NBL coming to St. John’s is another example of how SJSE (St. John’s Sports and Entertainment) lacks in its reporting to City Council,” Galgay posted on Twitter.
