There were some anxious moments for motorists in Corner Brook this afternoon after a large piece of concrete fell from a bridge and onto a busy roadway in the heart of the city’s downtown.

The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. today when, according to a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary spokesperson, a section of this bridge crossing along the Lewin Parkway in Corner Brook crumbled; crashing into traffic travelling along Main Street and Humber Road.

One automobile ran over a piece of the concrete, causing significant damage to the vehicle. However, there were no injuries reported.

Members of the RNC were on hand diverting traffic away from the overpass while officials from the province’s transportation and works department assessed the damage.

At this point, no cause has been determined, and officials have not indicated if they believe more of the structure may be compromised or unstable.

The investigation into the incident continues.
