Delegates at a Liberal party convention voted Saturday to call on the provincial government to declare 2019 the “Year of the Cod.”
The resolution urged the government to plan a week-long cod festival to celebrate Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as proud “People of Cod.”
The resolution is not binding on the provincial government.
The motion was the subject of some derision after delegates earlier voted down a resolution to urge DFO to halt commercial caplin fishing until the state of the stock could be assessed scientifically.
The caplin motion was strongly supported by some fishermen who are delegates at the convention because caplin are a food source for cod. But other delegates argued against a ban on the caplin fishery because of the economic impact on harvesters.
Delegates are also voting on whether to hold a review of Premier Dwight Ball’s leadership. Those results will be announced later Saturday.
