Gerry Rogers is the new leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party.
Rogers won the leadership Sunday afternoon with 67 per cent of the vote. More than 1,400 party members voted in the leadership contest between Rogers, the MHA for St. John’s Centre, and MUN economist Alison Coffin. Rogers received 971 votes, while Coffin received 479.
Rogers will now lead the party into the next provincial election in 2019, replacing interim leader Lorraine Michael and former leader Earle McCurdy, who resigned last fall. Coffin had run for the NDP in the 2015 election and told NTV News it is very likely that she will run for the party again in the next election.
