Newfoundland and Labrador has lost a well known public servant and politician. Former premier Beaton Tulk has passed away.
Tulk died today after a long battle with cancer. He served as the province’s seventh premier for four months. His tenure ended in February of 2001 when Roger Grimes took over the job.
Tulk was a former school principal who was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1979 for Fogo district. He took the reins as Liberal leader and premier when Premier Brian Tobin moved on to federal politics in 2000. Tulk always said it was a job he didn’t want but he eventually grew into it.
In his later years, Tulk penned his memoir, A Man of My Word. He donated his royalties from sales of the book to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation.
