Suncor Energy has reported an unauthorized discharge of synthetic-based mud from the mobile drilling unit Transocean Barents, the C-NLOPB announced Saturday.
About 28,000 litres was released on Friday in the Terra Nova field, about 350 kilometres off the coast of St. John’s. There were no injuries, and the C-NLOPB says no seabirds or marine life were observed in the area.
Drilling has been suspended while Suncor investigates the cause of the discharge. The Canadian Coast Guard was notified.
The C-NLOPB says it is monitoring the situation. Drilling will not resume until it is safe to do so and Suncor gets approval from the C-NLOPB’s chief conservation officer.
