Brandon Phillips has been sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole for 12 years.

Philips was convicted just before Christmas for the 2015 shooting death of Larry Wellman at Captain’s Quarters, a bar and hotel in downtown St. John’s.

Philips was given an automatic life sentence, but at issue is his parole eligibility. At a hearing last week, the Crown argued for 15 years, pointing to a lack of remorse for his actions. The defense argued for 12 years, saying there is still hope for Philips.
